Why did the soil of the Mesopotamians region of Sumer grow such good crops?

the area is basically a delta--which means that rich top soil flows down from upstream and feeds the growing areas in the delta. Same idea as the Nile River Delta and the Mississippi River Delta. In what's now Iraq it was the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
