your buddy must learn to brace himself, either mentally or with drugs, dont give others the power to dish out pain and punishment,,, i personally take a nice bottle of wine to all family get-togethers, i dont even have to encourage its opening, others are standing in line wanting some too, lol so i use the drug of wine,
i know what he means though, i have an aunt who to this day can make me feel uncomfortable, and a little feeling of self-doubt pops up, i get up and politely walk away when that happens,
watching tv is a typical thing to do, so i think that is a good plan,
