How can I convince my parents that I really need a horse. I have offered to help pay, but still they say we are not financially ready. I know we can afford it but they say we can't. They want to spend there money other places and I
am willing to respect that but I really want a horse. They may lease one but I dont know. Please help me!
Thanks!

getting a horse is a big step, but if you think you are ready, then talk to them, draw a diagram, and explain it to them, why you want need and deserve a horse!

ok, first of all, i know EXACTLY what you mean!!!!
it was like that for me too, untill about 2 years ago. my parents convinced me that there was no way in the world that i was going to get a horse, not matter if i even payed for it.
so the things i did were:
i started making some of my own money anyway. i worked at my barn for a little bit, taking care of all the horses (this is what convinced my parents that i knew enough about them and that i was responsible)
then, ( this was a big step for me) i quite all of my extra activities that was keeping me buisy to show my parents that i had the time. (as you can see, it takes alot of responsiblity. i still dont really have time today to do anything besides track.)
then, i started looking at the internet. this is where i found my perfect horse. www.dreamhorse.com! understand that your horse wont be there as soon as you start looking, or maybe you will!
also, explain to your parents, that you are only willing to buy the RIGHT horse for you. you have know idea how many AMAZING horses there are out there today for $500!! i have one right now that cost me 500, and it is the best thing i have ever had! hes always sound and is bomb proof! hes not the prettiest thing, but he was $500!!!
if your parents arnt still willing to buy you a horse, then consider leasing or half leasing. i did half leasing for a while before my horse, and it worked out great! i didnt have to pay for the horse's vet bills or anything, and it only cost me $200! (that is INCREDIBLY cheep!) for my horse now adays, per month, its a lot more than that. i also like half leasing because if i couldnt make it to the barn one day, then the other owner would ride it! he was also really good, and so i did some shows with him and everything.
good luck, i hoped that helped!
persistanse and actions are the key. they will prove to your parents that you REALLY want one, and that its not just another materialistic thing that will last for 6 months.

The big part of this question that you left out is you age!! Are ou old enough to have a job? Do you have a car to get to your job? I think leaseing is a very good option that covers some of the costs because the real owners will carry most of that then you are only paying for the lease not the whole horse. When horses are injured or sick they cost big time and thats what they are looking at and i fear that you are looking past all for those expences to get to just monthly costs. I spent $300 on a eye ulcer over the summer and $700 for a gashed knee from the neighbor dog running one of my horses through the fence. I am not saying that you horse will have these issues but . He will get hurt domestic horses are the most accident prone animals in the world these are all things that i feel your parents are looking at and your not

I don't know where you live, but here in SoCal, it runs about $10,000/yr to keep a horse, with board, shoes every 6-8 weeks, vet care, incidentals like fly spray, worming every 3 months, grain, supplements, etc. Add lessons, showing, a trailer and tack, and your parents are right (and they DO know what they can afford, not you); they can't afford it unless they make well over $100,000/yr. Figure it this way-- that's more than 10% of their income, even then.
See if your instructor can arrange a 1/2 or even a 1/3 lease, or knows someone who can.

tell your parents that having a horse would teach you resposibility, so they would much rather spend money on the costs of horse stuff rather than drugs and rehab! my mom told this to my friend's parents who also really wants a horse, and they started laughing, and saying that it did make a good point.

IT'S THE UPKEEPING! IT COSTS A TON! It's not the actually buying of the horse, but what you have to do after you have it.
