We're in La Jolla and would like to move elsewhere in the San Diego area. La Jolla is just too noisy and constant construction, very dense. We do love the village atmosphere though and being close to the beach. We don't want to go too far from La Jolla (village, not the UTC area). We are retired and so don't care about schools. Want quiet, no dense traffic, ocean, village-atmosphere, and affordability would be nice. Any suggestions?

Man that is awesome I love La Jolla. I think they have some awesome scuba and snorkeling area. I love the waves in Ocean Beach. Pacific Beach has a nice beach, but I don't recommend living there b/c it is just to crowded. Imperial Beach is nice I think, but it is kind of a more poor and run down area. If you live in La Jolla they have some very mild waves. Parts of La Jolla don't. So here's how to sum it up. I love Ocean Beach. They have nice waves nearly year round and it is not to crowded and it is not a poor area of town. Solana Beach is nice and has a friendly and nice little shopping area and a nice beach. It is a little farther north than you are now. Imperial Beach is nice and not to crowded and has some nice walking areas and a pretty nice beach. I love all the beaches. I have been to all of them up to Solana. I love La Jolla too. They are all nice.

Good Luck

Solana Beach is about as good as it gets. There is not a lot of traffic in most areas, and compared to Del Mar, it is much more affordable. It still has the small village fell as well. There is Race traffic and Fair traffic during the summer if you are right by the track, but the rest is unaffected. Two places to consider would be Carlsbad and Coronado. Carlsbad would be the more affordable of the two. You are not going to get "ocean" and "affordable" and "quiet" in the same place. I loved Ocean Beach when I lived there as a student but even that's gotten too expensive if you live in the quiet end of town (say, south of Narragansett).

I love the Torrey Pines/Del Mar area but it doesn't meet your criteria of "no dense traffic" or "affordable".

I live in Encinitas which might also be what you're looking for. I love Solana Beach but way too expensive for me. Leucadia and Cardiff also nice but not real affordable for most.

You have to be completely out of your minds for wanting to move from La Jolla. Most people would give an arm and a leg to be retired in La Jolla. I wish I had the same problem.

Any place in Old Town San Diego is a good bet. The Butcher Shop in Chula Vista is another good place as is Mona Lisa in Little Italy (Corner of Hawthorn & India) in Downtown San Diego. Happy Dinning.

carmel valley is about a 20 minute drive from la jolla, there you can also in about 5-10 minutes get to the beaches in del mar. many of my friends live there and it is an amazing family atmosphere. it is quit and peaceful but can also be filled with fun. neighbors become gret lifetime friends adn there is so much to do in that area

yeah, i think imperial beach is all of those things that you described and also way under-rated, though it is a little far from everything else... far down south. but of all the beach communities in san diego, i think it fits ur profile best.

it is also the most affordable.
