Before you Defrag your computer using the insight from above, do this.

Perform a Disk Cleanup.

In Power Options - uncheck the hibernate field.

In advanced System Settings change the Page File to specify NO PAGING FILE.

These are unmovable areas on your harddrive.

Defrag and then go back and update the fields mentioned above.

Download PageDefrag from MSFT -

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/PageDefrag.mspx

Set this up to Run Once at boot time.

All Done.

On XP, go to start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmenter. I would recommend deleting your temp internet files, browser cache and history files first. Also, run a program like Ad-Aware SE before you defrag. Also, if you turn-off your anti-virus and any other programs that are running in the back-ground, disable your screen-saver, it will complete faster. Good luck!

As said, double click My Computer and then Right Click and choose properties.

Pick Tools

and then Defrag.

BUT - Besides all program stopped, make sure your screen saver is stopped or it will interfere and stop your defrag.
