A meteorologist does research about weather related matters or provides forecasts for the weather. A meteorologist is a trained professional, usually with a science degree. A weatherman is not necessarily a meteorologist, but a meteorologist can be a weatherman. A weatherman can be someone who just broadcasts weather information (using forecasts written by meteorologists) via the media.

The accepted professional standard for a meteorologist is a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric Science or Meteorology. Some TV "weathermen" have no meteorological training at all, while others calling themselves meteorologists have either no training, or a "certificate of broadcast meteorology."
Other thought... some people can't say meteorologist.. so to them they are all called weathermen.
p.s. Tried to find another joke like that, but could only find this one:
Q. What's the difference between a weatherman and a corpulent bladder expert?
A. One is a Meteorologist , the other is a Meaty Urologist!
but I think I like your version better.

That's like saying, "What's the difference between a news presenter and a journalist." Some are just presenters and some are journalists who have become presenters. Some weatherpersons (trying to be PC here) are just pretty faces reading a script and others are meteorologists. For example, here in New Zealand, we have some good looking people reading a script and pointing in the right direction on the bluescreen. But we have also had one weatherman who was a meteorologist but sadly died recently - http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10444825
So there ya have it. Sometimes there's a difference and sometimes there isn't.
PS - what idiot with no life gave us all thumbs down?

A weather man stands infront of a greenscreen and reads the screen next to the camera to tell you that it may or may not rain, a meteorologist is one who studies weather conditions of any givin area and accually knows what they are talking about.
therefore, a weather man is adjacent to an actor/actress..... a meteorologist is what i am going to be.
does that make sence...?

METEROLOGIST IS THE ONE THAT STUDIES THE WHEATER WHILE THE ONE THAT TELLS US THE WEATHER IS THE ONE THAT STANDS IN FRONT OF THE SCREEN, AT LEAST THATS WHAT I THINK.
