I think that this statement is an over simplified version of a truism.

"What ever happens, happens for a reason".

The way the statement is posed in your question is suggestive of a philosophy of randomness that I think does not exist. It also hints of indifference which can be detrimental to a persons situation.

I was making love to my girlfriend, and she told me we should use contraception, but I said, "whatever happens, happens". Then 9 months later we had a child, and 15 years later that child drove my prestine 1967 Ford Mustang into a resevoir. Cest l'vie.

This statement says that determinism is the highest power, that there is no choice. People might think that they have this freedom of choosing what they do and think, but it is determinism which determines the outcome, one's actions.

It is my point of view that it is determinism what rules the world (or rather everything). But this quote does not support it very much. it's a great mantra when things are out of your control.
and you have to realize that you have no control.

it's not such a good mantra when things are really in your influence and you could do something.

if you could do something but are choosing not to, you might say that to indicate the choice that you hvae made.

Que Sera, Sera. it just means, to me, to try not to stress things so much, and i think that it is a very valuable philosophy. whatever happens, happens. you have to let go of some of your need for control of events. it helps you be less miserable when things don't go your way. and more happy when things do.

It's stating the obvious, but it also implies that you can't do anything about everything that happens which isn't true all of the time.

Depends on the situation, but I would rather try to get the outcome I would like than try to do nothing at all, know what I mean?
