PMS doesn't affect a woman's ability to think rationally, at least not with most women. It may put her in a crappy mood for about a week, though.

It is unfair and unacceptable if one gender is paid more than the other for doing the same job to the same standard. There are traits that are more prevalent in one gender than another. There are jobs in which certain traits are more valuable. So, it is possible that one gender has an edge in certain jobs without that being caused by sexual discrimination. It can happen that those jobs that favour the traits of one gender are more highly valued by society and so attract a higher rate of pay. That is not to pretend sexual bigotry does not exist - that would be naive (as reading earlier answers proves ... and the question for that matter). Overall, I believe the similarities in work performance between men and women far exceed any differences so I would expect greater comparability of earnings. Also, perhaps we need to look at the value we attach to certain occupations and to rebalance the rewards between the traditional 'top dog' roles and those that provide the cohesion and continuity without which the top dogs would have nowhere to perform. There are many kinds of unfair discrimination in the workplace. Some are gender related. All need to be tackled.

If women earn less than men this is sexism which needs to be combated.

Joke, yes? This "is" sexism. No, it proves one of two things: 1. Women to not apply for the highest earning jobs 2. Men are better than women at the highest earning jobs. People should be chosen by ability, not gender.

Perhaps a woman going through her period does work harder but it generally makes other workers feel reticent to speak to them and and can have a negative effect on moral.

I dont think they cannot think straight.. I'm sure that, just like i keep a straight face when my bad day makes my body release hormones which make me moody, they can keep it when their period makes them to release them.
Anyway, the wage gap is due to personal choices of women, like working half time if they are married with children to focus on the children, and dont working overtime (which is true in average), which create the apparent "wage gap"
However, there is no comany with a policy of paying women less than men, and the trouble wal mart got into some time ago for being suspected of having one, proves it.
Rio Madeira: I've noticed that you claim that there is still some discrimination in the workforce. I would like if you could explain what you mean, and if it doesnt bother you, cite sources.

I think young men should be paid less because they suffer from the effects of 'testosterone poisoning'. The jails are full to bursting as a result, and they are responsible for more and deadlier car crashes too; indeed, they are responsible for most serious on-the-job accidents. Why reward this?

Would you please stop playing the period card? We've already established that a woman's rational nature can override hormones at this time.

Either way, young women now have more earning power than men. But on the whole, women earn less because they TEND TO (not all of them do) opt for lower-paying careers than men. There is some discrimination in certain workplaces, but not nearly as much as there used to be.

No there has been cognitive studies that have shown women while menstruating show no cognitive impairment. If women earn less than men this is sexism which needs to be combated.

I've never had that problem myself. I can think quite logically no matter what time of the month it is. I never let something like that interfere in my daily life. I have never taken a day off from work or school due to a period.

Try putting that question to a nurse (female) if you get to spend any time in need of nursing (in an A/E / ITU / CCU dept), or if you should become a father and your child ever needs specialist nursing in a Special Care Baby Unit, or something similar.

You have a wonderful sense of humour. I hope it never ever lets you down ~ or gets in your way.

rontflmao! Yes dearie - you figured it out. It is a proven scientific fact that menstruating steals blood from the brain rendering young women incapable of thinking. This is also true of folks undergoing surgery - that's why they're 'put under' so they don't lose their thinking ability and why our young folks returning from war because of injuries - are never quite the same again. It's all about the blood.
