It should be! I use it all the time.....but it's supposed to be a lot....well, that just sucks if you ask me. If the dictionary can add new words all the time I wish they would add "alot" it looks fine and it works for me.... what more do they want!?
edit: I just have to say...when you see the words "a lot" doesn't it make you think of a piece of land? that is why it should be "alot" when you are talking about alot of stuff...

My English teacher in college said it is a word but should not be used as much as people use it. I must admit I do use it too often. I use it alot but I have seen people who use words that are worse. most people don't know when to put an apostrophe between its and it's and that is more irritating to me than using the word alot. I have seen other grammar mistakes on yahoo and misspelled words so anyone who complains about alot should first check their grammar and spelling before complaining about something so trivial.

I guess it's 2 words but I could swear that when I learned the word in school it was 'one' word. The word 'lot' has many definitions.
