Silly question, perhaps, but I find that I don't laugh unless I'm very close to people. I don't know how to joke (tell me?!?). I don't know kind of conversation to have with people that I meet. I don't know how to socialise!

My guess is that you are very involved with your work and you don't get much time to get out. I know a lot of people like that, namely doctors. I would suggest you watch some funny movies, or find something of interest that does not involve work. I find that when you truly enjoy something, like snorkeling, sky diving, skiing, the words just flow and you will have incredibly funny things to talk about because you are having fun. Enjoy yourself. If that does not work, just ask someone questions about something they enjoy doing. I guarantee they will talk your ear off.

You don't have to know how to joke to laugh
You just need a good sense of humor, in a way that you can see the humor in a joke, and not get offended by any, or take something too literal or serious.

I think what you need is people who are willing to be your friend. Someone who understands that you're not good at that, so they could be the one who initiates a conversation.

Me myself, I'm not good at socializing either, and I actually like making friends with people who are not good at socializing too. Those people who sits way up at the social ritcher scale would probably finds me boring anyway.

There's no hard and fast rule regarding socializing and it's almost impossible to teach someone.

My only suggestion is to watch other people while they socialize and try to learn from them

Well, to a certian extent, your socialising now. So your proving that you can. Just go and do it with people you know now.
