Actually, it seems as though a majority of Americans DEPEND on our government to make their decisions for them... as opposed to letting people make free choices based on the evidence/risks they are willing to take... Government has become our surrogate parent. I would say it is those who DETEST "individual liberty" as opposed to those who cherish it...

Few seem upset by the erosion of our freedoms... things like the smoking bans, reproductive rights, the Patriot Act, the insane levels of taxtation... we accept it all like the nation of sheep we have become...

Mostly politicians who know it's one more emotional issue hardly anyone can oppose, just like gay marriage, flag-burning and abortion (none of which have any right to be considered 'political' issues).
Politicians pick on smokers because they're an easy target and a vulnerable group that can be discriminated against, taxed, and blamed for society's ills. The same politicians, of course, are too cowardly to attack the big tobacco companies by outlawing the manufacture, sale and distribution of cigarettes (that would eliminate billions of dollars in tax revenues politicians have prostituted themselves for).
I don't smoke. I abhor sitting in a bar and having my clothes, food and hair infested with second-hand smoke. But as long as cigarettes are a legal substance, smokers should have the freedom to 'light up' as they choose. No-smoking bans should be applied by individual businesses and dictated by the market place. Banning individuals from using a legal substance is discriminatory and should be - in itself - against the law. -RKO- 11/22/07

Uneducated people who don't understand that second hand smoke isn't nearly as bad as they've been taught.

Now, I fully support not smoking around children, or in a church, or in an oxygen tent, or a fireworks factory, but the last time I checked, there weren't any children in bars, and everyone was drinking poison. I also reject any notion that it is unfair to the general populace to allow smoking outside.
