Has it been profitable? Did you have unexpected hassles? Is it worth the time and effort?

I've sold books on amazon many times. The only hassle is deciding what to price the book at to get the most amount of money after amazon's cut and the postage. It's a careful balance. I think my best month was around $250, and that was daily runs to the post office with 2-3 books at a time.

Personally, I've only Bought thru Amazon. I Sell thru Ebay. Unless your book(s) are worth quite a lot, I don't see how it could be profitable to sell $1-5 books at all thru Amazon. But again, I never tried it. I only sell books that have high value on Ebay, which has been only a few. Most aren't worth bothering with.
My personal experience...

You don't get much unless they are collectors items or vintage. My advice would be to sell them on craigslist.org. That way you don't pay any seller's fees.
