By the way I grew up in Texas and most of the people I've met have pronounced it the way I do. I've also met some people from up north who have pronounced it pee-can. So I don't think it's necessarily a southern or northern thing. I think it's just a matter of preference.

In the North, it's pe cahn, with the emphasis on the second syllable. In the South, it's pee can, with the emphasis on the first syllable.
