I was just reading an article about retailers feeling the pinch this holiday season. It said that rising fuel costs were causing shoppers to down grade to discount stores or buy less so retailers were decreasing projections of sales.

I know it's still early but has anybody decided to limit their budget this year because of rising costs? Have you decided to shop at discounters to get the most bang for your buck? How many people are on your list and what is your total budget?

I have 11 people on my list (all adults mostly family and two close friends). I'm almost done shopping. I shopped mostly online but I did shop in some brick and mortar stores but nothing that I'd consider to be a discounter like Wal-Mart or KMart. I used special sales or promotions when available. My budget is about $1000-$1200.

By the way the $1000-$1200 is the most I've ever budgeted for. I didn't realize that there was a "crunch" going on but besides gas prices, I haven't really felt it.

I haven't felt any "crunch" on prices rising. But, I've just quit my job and moved across the country so I can't afford to spend a lot on gifts this year. Normally my budget would be $25-$100 per person (depending on the person) for about 7 people (all adults). So I spend less than $500 for Christmas. This year will be tighter as I also have a couple of extra people I have to buy for this year for various reasons (marriages, etc).

I don't like WalMart and won't shop there. I don't really shop at Zellers or any other "low cost" shops, either... I buy what I want to get people and don't pay "too" much attention to the price.

In my family/circle there are 20 adults and 11 children.

We enjoy spending time together, and we are not materialistic.

Years ago, we all agreed that we didn't want to add to each others future diets and yard sales.

We do a secret santa for the adults and give gifts to the children. That way everyone gets something without anyone going into debt. We pay cash for all of our purchases and keep our total holiday spending/per shopper at no more than $300.

Love, friendship, spending time together, building high quality relationships are the best gifts people can ever give each other, no matter what holiday it is.

I shop all year round and get the best deals I can find. I do not have a budget. I have a list of people I buy for.

When it comes to my own children, I have always overdone it a bit.

This year is the first year I have budgeted for them and Christmas might not be so GRAND, but it will be good.

The kids are older now. Time for changes.

Merry HO HO!

i budget by person. for my sister i usually spend $25. for parents about $50 each, grandparents $30 each, close friends $20 each, coworkers/school friends either like $5 each or homemade cookies or something. for my cousins, aunts and uncles we usually send them like a smithfield ham that they can all enjoy because we live far away.
