The NFL has the AFC (American Football Conference) and the NFC (National Football Conference) just to organize the teams into 2 leagues. The representative from the AFC (who beats his opponent in the AFC championship) and the representative from the NFC (who beats his opponent in the NFC championship) meet up in the Super Bowl to determine the champions of the NFL that year. With leagues, it is more organized and categorized.

Sorry David T, you are only partially correct. The AFL (American Football Conference) did open for buisness win the late Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt decided to make his own leauge after the NFL turned him down for an expansion team in Dallas. Therefore, he created his own leauge and his own team in Dallas. The Dallas Texans, in 1964 he moved his team to the Kansas City and became the Chiefs. The first Super Bowl held in 1966 was between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. It was called the NFL - AFL championship game. The AFL was making a name for themselves and was drawing from the college talents in which the NFL used to have exclusive rights to for so many years prior. The AFL was doing quite well and was about to sign a rather large contract with NBC because of the popularity and quality of the teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs, The Oakland Raiders, The Houston Oilers, The Buffalo Bills, The Miami Dolphins The New York Jets, etc. There for the NFL commissioner Pete Rosell met with Lamar Hunt and representatives of the AFL because they saw this major threat of their rival league on not only talent, but dollars as well. Therefore they decided to merge after the 1969 season. In which the last two super bowls leading into that final merger were won by AFL teams (New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs) showing proof that the quality of both leagues were equal. This merger thus created the two conferences we have today. The AFC (American Football Conference) and the NFC (National Football Conference).

It used to be 2 different leagues(the AFL and the NFL) until they merged in the early 70's.
To answer your second question, yes. There will be a representative from the AFC and a representative from the NFC in the Super Bowl.

1960 to 1969 was the American Football League
Pitts, Cleveland now Balt, and Baltimore (the Manning Colts) moved to the AFC after the AFL-NFL Merger.
There was two different leagues and very competitive.
Price bidding for players and TV contracts.
Then as said, there was a merger to one full league and they made the AFC and NFC>
Lots of history check Wikepedia or books on this as it was interesting

For those of you who still remember the old American Football League which was started by the late Lamar Hunt, who owned the former Dallas Texans, moved the team to Kansas City where they changed their name in 1963 to the Chiefs.
The reason for the merger to the NFL was because there was more money being made by NFL teams and the AFL was on the verge of folding their tent and going home. But the NFL felt there were a lot of good quality teams in the AFL so a merger was proposed.
This merger has stayed in tack for more than 20 years.
When the USFL came to town they lasted for about four years then when they sued the NFL for antitrust violations they (the USFL) was awarded a whooping $1.

Yes, that is actually the only difference, other than the fact that you only play 4 outer-conference games, while you play 12 inner-conference games.
