Beautiful song, if a little sad.

Hearts of Gold are a rare phenomenon; most hearts are made of simple glass. But, even if the search is fruitless, and even when I grow weary, I can’t think of a superior way to waste my time. Really, I think we cross the ocean not in search of a savior with a gleaming core, but in search of the one who can gently unearth our *own* Shining Spirit.

Then again, in all our gloriously flawed Humanity, we sometimes create difficulty where there is simplicity. Surely, a Golden-Hearted Soul would have the Golden Touch. So perhaps, in mining the Earth, we forget stop and look around us. A true golden heart would be astonishingly obvious, as he would be surrounded by endless fields of gold…

The Desert, upon examination, is anything but barren.

I never heard that song. But. Nowadays, or ever--how could it be a waste of time, or a lost cause if one believes in hearts of gold? & never too old! I've known a few. Yikes, just realized I'll be 35 the first of the year!
I know an elderly gentleman, (72), who just found his. He wasn't even mining.

It depends...One can not make lots of people happy, nor can the others make you happy, so yes, what's the point ?! If one is looking for that special someone in his life and eventually finds that person, one still has to face the misery of others; we can't turn a blind eye on all kinds of disasters happening around us and live on happily oblivious of them... But in this context I almost forgot about the issue; the Heart of Gold...It sure is good to have one, then you're bound to find another, if you know what I mean...

No, it's not a waste of time. Those of us with golden hearts find each other, many times right here on Y!A. I will never forget the first birthday party in Sunnyvale last December, where I got to meet face-to-face with people I already loved from knowing them here and on 360. That's especially true of Richard, who is now my best friend, and Quiet Warrior, my only real born-again Christian friend. That was a magical time with golden hearts all over the room.

But Neil Young is not the only one who is getting old, you know! And that was in 1971!

How could you be so cynical? Look around, search and you'll surely find what you are seeking! But to begin with, your own heart should be of pure gold, then only can you value another's.....

Oh! I love Neil's rendition soooo much!!! Lovely voice with just the right touch of nasal twang and all that multi-tasking, playing guitar with that mouth-organ, simply amazing! Such simplicity, vulnerability, I feel like hugging him. I'm sure 'Hearts of Gold' showered on him after this......how could they not? Ummmmm...the 70s!!!

I guess that depends on whether you have found your mother-load or not. I found mine many moons ago and keep finding new ways to enjoy it every day. If you do find it, how can it be a lost cause. I hope you have found yours my friend.

Here is another version to think about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CcOx1ixzJw&feature=related

And a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you also!!

I hit the mother-lode once but it turned out to be fool's gold. Only Fools Rush In but then again I'm a fool, A Fool on a Hill.

it is all dependent upon an individual's prspective of a 'heart of gold'. you may not have to spend time searching when your heart of gold who fits to your expectations/definitions of that is, is right within your reach.
In correlating comparison, you may have to spend more time searching, if the genuine heart of gold is within your reach, yet, you're not sure if it is indeed your heart of gold.. in this case, the effort is futile right from the start because you already have many distracting concepts that hinder you from accepting, this one is really the heart of gold..therefore, you can't possibly love that heart of gold,if there were ifs, ands, and buts-otherwise know as conditions.

* distractions like: material benefits.. they do indeed blind us from seeing in clarity what we're looking for, when it comes to heart of gold..

I mined, I found a heart of gold, and I'm growing young.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I too love this song. No, there are still Hearts of Gold out there, but you must learn discernment, there are also a lot of predators!
