Have you ever wondered how to put together a weather forecast? I will try to answer some of those questions. I have been working in the field of weather for over 25 years and I find experience to be invaluable. The old days of hand plotting surface maps, coloring in warm and cold fronts and areas of precipitation are only distant memories. Anyone can log onto a weather web site with tons of information available to the user. It’s here where the problems start. Computer models can supply information for the next hour or the next month. Years ago there was only one computer model that the weather forecaster looked at. Currently there are over 10 computer models each one offering different solutions. Need I say anything more.
We are the 1st major network to offer weather graphics in HIGH DEFINITION. So if you have a high definition TV at home sit back and enjoy! Our (myself and Al Rocker) weather day of decisions usually starts by 4am. I have prepared the day before for what to expect when I walk into the network weather office early in the morning. I still believe in doing things the old-fashioned way, so I do analyze and post weather maps for the 1st half hour of my day. After discussing with Al what the major headlines are for the day I begin to work on the graphics. Our new HD weather graphics system has really come a long way since the late 1980’s. If anyone remembers, Willard Scott had a large map, which he stood in front of and reported the weather. This map was hand-painted daily. If you have old clippings of the show take a look at this map, it was one of a kind.
Since the weather can and does change by the minute I try to use the latest information at my hands for preparing as accurate a forecast as possible. Since we are somewhat limited by time, a lot of our weather graphics only air for a short time. Maps and decisions, which were talked about early in the day, are often changed so there usually never is a dull minute. The art of forecasting has improved dramatically over the years, but I doubt if it will ever be perfect. If you think about it, wouldn’t that be boring. All the chatter in the grocery stores about the weather forecasters would be gone and the old phrase of “Well they get paid for being wrong” would be by the wayside…Winter ended like a lion for some of us, so hopefully spring-time will be enjoyable for everyone.

It's been snowing since yesterday afternoon. Light snow but we now have about 4 inches on the ground. The day before yesterday the high temperature was almost 60 degrees. I think that winter has arrived here in Iowa. I'm ready for summer to come back.

At the moment it's sunny out and I think it's supposed to get up to 80 degrees today. Of course, this is Florida weather. I miss the fall weather in my home state in Connecticut. So it doesn't feel like the holiday season at all.
