I notice these lines in the sky, which run from thousands of feet high all the way to the ground. Are they part of the test or is it a natural phenom which occurs because of the blast?

In some airburst nuclear tests, smoke rockets were fired in a circular pattern straight up at the time of the nuclear explosion. The purpose of these was to make the concussion from the nuclear blast visible on film.

The most popular film of a nuclear explosion was filmed at one of these tests, and the rocket smoke trails have become part of the public image of a nuclear event.
