your mind is able to process many thoughts at the same time. many times you're aware only of one of them at a time, but if you open your awareness you'll be aware of more at any given time.
same goes with music. there are always several tunes that you know and some that you made up goin on there at the same time. just like in the air, if you open more than one station of awareness, you'll be able to hear more than one tune.
