On my laptop- no matter where I am (ex my house, my moms, panera bread, college) the WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION list never shows any connection names it always says, "No wireless networks found in range" Even though the wireless network connected button in the task bar will be on and on mouseover shows the network name and i can access the internet so obviously i am connected. So what the heck is causing this? It's frustrating when I'm in a location with more than one signal and need to choose what I want etc etc... Any help?

No- I cannot even see open networks that I am able to connect to without a name and password! It doesn't matter wether it's a secure network or not- it never shows up.. Even at school once I enter my name and password to access their secure network- it wont show up in the available networks list. Previously- before it got all messed up- it would show ALL networks in range- even the secure ones- but would show them "locked" out.

I would have to guess that Windows is not controlling your wireless. More than likely with your laptop, the manufacturer has their own utility.
You can go to the properties of your wireless connection and make sure that Windows is set up to control your wireless connections.

The reason is you can see other networks you are in range of but you can not connect.
These are Secure Networks and require a Username and Password.
Other Networks (Open) Networks are the only ones that don't require you to have a username and password. On these networks you see them and simply click o them and connect. You must highlight them to connect to them.
There is more to it than simply moving from place to place and connecting without you making some choices and connecting manualy.
