In my experience German schools do teach that unpleasant period of their history. Also there is a prison sentance if you deny the holocaust in Germany.

Sadly the same cannot be said for Japan who are currently rewriting history to paint themselves as the victims, the allies as the aggressors and are erasing the horrific acts of evil brutality committed by their armed forces against the Chinese civillians and British, Australian, Indian and other Commonwealth prisoners of war.
The rest of the world must make sure that WE never forget.

I understand they have special courses in their schools on the subject. But their media has not shied away from the subject. Articles of the Nazis, Hitler, the Jewish holocaust and the war come in their magazines, books, movies and tv very often. Just recently they had a tv documentary of the Allied's airwar on Nazi Germany. And had a panel where people argued that in relation to the Holocaust. Germans, Austrians and the rest of Europeans are still haunted by this terrifying historical incident.

I would like to see, or attend, any grade school which teaches in-depth political and military history. If not, then I volunteer to start one and offer my services as a teacher.

Other than a military academy - what schools teach about the Nazis and what the Japanese military did in World War II??

Yes, they do. To "J.S.", as a high school teacher, I totally agree. The curriculum is so watered down to make it as easy as possible for "no child to be left behind"! I get the rare student who would really like to delve into a topic, but I tell him or her to read and research on their own. Most of the kids come to school with no background knowledge from home and no ability to think for themselves. How many 9th graders I've had who do not know who Christopher Columbus was! After years and years of intensive history study, the most I can hope to teach them is some broad concepts of historical periods and a few key names and terms. And then just pray they remember them on the state tests.
