I'd say Jim Brown, look at the stats he acomplished in only 106 games. He had over 12,000 rushing yards, became the only runningback to average over 100 yards per game, and had 5.4 yards per carry for his career. Those are amazing numbers considering he only played 9 years, and they only played 12 games per year back then...

If you mean best punishing running back, Jim Brown for sure, he would look for people to hit and run over when he had the ball.

Its hard to say the game changes every decade. You have better training now then back in the day. Prior to the 70's these guys had to work there regular job and then practice. Not the big names but many players. Back to the best of all time. You really have to give the nod to Barry Sanders. The line of the Lions was pathetic but that man still picked up yards with his cuts and speed. To me he was truly the best back of all time. Peace out................
