Yeah - I'm with you on this one...
Movie stars like Gregory Peck, Paul Newman, Kat hepburn, and Betty Davis are gone. The Tom Hanks/Meryl Streep types are out there, and their work speaks for its self.
The cult of celebrity is devoid of substance. Getting by on looks as opposed to character and integrity. Train wrecks that have no clue as to what the word "class" entails.

Personal opinion:
Movie stars : Well-like personalities displayed in movies; their sheer presence could sell admission. Ex: Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Ingrid Bergman, etc.
Celebrities : Well-recognizable individuals within a said population. Ex: Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Lindsay Lohan, Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Ellen DeGeneres, PDiddy, Tommy Lee, Pamela Anderson, Gordon Ramsey, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Princess Diana, etc.
Here's the main idea : Where movie stars are almost certainly celebrities, the reverse is not necessarily true; celebrities can be because of other reason than starring in movies (Nicole Ritchie, Princess Di).
Other possible interesting question : What is the difference between an "actor" and a "movie star"?
Answers to come some other time, perhaps.

Well, I think my interpretation of what qualifies is different.. I see Lindsay Lohan more as a "movie star" because she started as an actor.. and she CAN act.. people have started viewing her characters through what they know of her..
Tom Green was pretty much a nobody comedian who married a "movie star" for a little while.. so he is a celebrity.
The Hilton sisters are celebrities who act/sing/whatever because they were first and foremost known for being heiresses.
There are some people I see as celebrities who were actors.. but mainly because they can't decide what they are doing.. Jennifer Lopez is one.. She's an actor . (she's not bad.. not my favorite..but not bad), but with trying to stick her nose into music, fashion, and the general social life.. she's spreading herself too thin, taking some horrible roles and her acting carreer is suffering.
There is a fine line between movie stars and celebrities... and some people will drift back and forth between the two. Overall though.. it's because people are so obsessed with knowing everything about them that causes this. Any actor or celebrity who stays under the radar has to deal with constant rumors.. One example is Tim Curry.. you very rarely hear the rumors anymore because he never cared enough to argue about them.. but he is very low key, he is not in the tabloids.. but he still acts occaisionally.. David Bowie is another one.. a few splashy entrances .. but mostly he's not in the public eye unless he is touring.. I wish EVERY celebrity (movie star or not) had the opportunity to live a NORMAL life when not working. They are human after all.. they should be allowed to screw up every once in awhile without having their mistakes known worldwide in hours.

Agree. Stars are very big like you mentioned Charlize Theron , Tom Hanks. Then you just have the known people you see on TV which are famous but not as "big" as movie stars.

celebrities are people who are famous and they are "in the news" that everyone knows who they are.
movie stars are people who are simply actors/actresses.
i agree with the distinction becasue people who are in moives arent neccesarily famous, they need to do something to be known- which is what "in the news means"

celebrities are those with little or no actual tallent and are famous for tedious reasons and will appear in gossip magazines etc. Stars have a more refined fanbase and are more credable in their industry - they weild more power because of the importance in their name. however, this isn't to say they have much tallent, unlike proper 'actors'.
however this is debatable.
hope this helps!

Movie stars are just that , celebrities are anyone who has had their 15 minutes of fame, and then become instantly forgettable.
