Most people don't realize that Christianity is as much a "terrorist organization" as the Islamists and Muslim fanatical elements. Evidence the chief Christian leader in the USA, Bush. If he is "Christian", I am Albert Einstein's twin brother. Bush says he has "talked to god" and that is where he gets his direction from. So much for 'thou shall not kill'.

First of all, religion, like any other 'cause' can be used as an excuse for violence (this is a much wider problem than just religion):

I'll come right out and say that I believe that freedom under in the civilised, developed, polluting, (mostly) secular west is better than living under an oppressive medieval regime, whatever their moral/judicial code is based on. Skip to the last paragraph if this is too long.

1) When people stop thinking about their actions trusting that they are acting on a higher authority or moral imperative they rarely care that they may be violating the rights of others (inaliable or otherwise).

Countries that value freedom have already agreed that killing/maiming/discriminating against someone because they dont agree with you (for any reason) is unacceptable, even if you think you have a god given right to enforce your opinion. Any system of faith which sanctions a breech of agreed secular law has no place in modern society - mechanisms are already in place to deal with people who commit these crimes or encourage/incite others to carry them out. The fact that religion is being given as the reason is ultimatley irrelevant, any attack on your community/country/civilisation should be met with a measured but effective response.

2) Organised religion is often one or two steps away from the actual 'faith' as they are a form of social regulation (an agreed set of behaviours and customs rather than principles, interpretation is the province of the priest/elder), giving a community a focus; 'our way' becomes 'right', anything else is unusual and too easily viewed as 'wrong'. Unfortunatley, most religions can (and have in the past) been interpreted as having a 'convert or kill' policy (as well as some barbaric view on the definition and punishment of criminals), leading to regrettable actions in both the recent and the distant past.

New situations are viewed as upsetting the norm, rather than an opportunity to grow and reinterpret principles or values in a modern context.
Since it is unlikely that humanity will ever agree on the whole religion thing, we need to create an environment where members of different (or no) faiths can co-exist and (hopefully) come to some understanding. Encourage people to embrace the less oppressive aspects promoted by most faiths (charity, honesty, respect) properly applied these bring strength to any community. I encourage a zero-tolarance against unacceptable behavior regardless of the given reason.

At the end of the day, these are the actions of individuals who have chosen to act on what the think is right and reasonable (sound familiar?). The current war (and a many in the past) have been about preserving or eradicating a way of life, looking out from the inside, I think mine i better and I want it to stay. The problem is that I am less inclined to blow myself up to prove my point because I dont see attacks on my community as an attack on my faith and I have confidence in my coutries cultural and technological superiority. I am accustomed to thinking that the government will take care of the problem.

The world needs a demonstration that violent, oppressive organisations (religious or not) are not acceptable. Lots of people in the west, especially in europe see the current situation as a mistake or embarrassment and have not yet realised that (regardless of the cause) we are there now and need to finish what we started rather than selfishly whining to our governments to 'bring our boys home'.

Hopefully America will save itself.
The religious nutcases (Puritans) managed to get hold of power in Britain for 11 years after a Civil War and by Jimmeny did we regret it. 1649 -1660 was probably the dullest, most torturous period in English history (look what they did in Ireland and we've only just managed to sort that out) so we took matters into our own hands and brought back the monarchy and fun was back on the menu.

Hopefully the US will do something similar and take a stand against influential extremists of all religious leanings that seem to have a stranglehold on certain areas of politics.

This country was founded under Christianity, we are in no place to remove religion from a country which was founded "Under God" and no place to eliminate any religions because of freedom of religion. if you do not like it you are also free to leave this was once a great country but too many anti-Americans are twisting things and trying to change America into something else.
