No, yams and sweet potatoes are unrelated vegetables, though in both cases you're eating the root of a tropical vine. Sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) are an American plant of the morning glory family, whereas yams are of the genus Dioscorea. Yams, which are rarely seen in the U.S. and Canada but are a staple in tropical regions, can grow up to seven feet in length. No,sweet potatoes are called yams in parts of the United States especially in the southern and western portions of the country,but they are not true yams.

No - they are from different families and grown in different places around the world. Any doubt? Check out the price -- around the holidays, yams are like five times more expensive than sweet potatoes (or did I get that backwards?)

I don't know. all i know is that
1) I threw up sweet potatoes when I was little

Well, Yams are usually what we call them after they've been candied... but they are the same vegetable, yes.

Anyone who has a garden can tell you.. yes they are basically the same... as far as taste and what you have to go through to grow them... I am not a professional however...

potato, patoto, or as my grandson wrote on the grocery list... PoTots.... lol ya gotta love it... I've had that list for a year now... and will keep it forever!
