They are a showcase of new films or retrospective of a director or an actor. For most of them you can buy a ticket but some of them are by invitation only. You go and watch a movie and then talk to people, sometimes you can meet people involved in the making of the movie. They are to introduce a movie or a film maker to the general public and the art world. They are all over you have to check newspapers and movie magazines. There is one going on in Chicago right now, it is mainly for Polish movies. The biggest one is in Cannes in Europe.

They're the best place to see good films that haven't made it to the multiplex near you. They're everywhere, there are over 3,000 film festivals around the world every year.
The most popular ones are Tribeca, Sundance, and Cannes.
