Perhaps because when the World Series was instituted, the World of baseball was made up of the teams from the US. The teams from Canada came somewhat later, but it has never grown from there.

The World Baseball Classis is MLB's attempt to reconcile this - With Japan winning the first ever series.

That is a good question, really the only 2 countries with pro teams that take part in Major League baseball is the United States of America (of course) and Canada. But they only have one baseball team at the moment. And if you wanted to have the World Series battle between the USA and Canada, well the Toronto Blue Jays will have to make it to the playoffs, and far to the World Series, and see which of the team that plays in the United States makes it there.

When the term "World's Championship Series" was first used in the 1880s, baseball at a highly-skilled level was almost exclusively confined to North America, especially the United States.

Thus it was understood that the winner of the major league championship was the best baseball team in the world. The title of this event was soon shortened to "World's Series" and later to "World Series".

The United States continued to be the only professional baseball country until some decades into the 20th Century.

The first Japanese professional baseball efforts began in 1920. The current Japanese leagues date from the late 1940s. Various Latin American leagues also formed around that time.

In my opinion calling it the World Series is still a very valid name. Sure the teams that can play in it are from only two countries (only one team from Canada), but there is a significant number of players from all over the world. The best players in the world play in the major leagues.

When the best players in the world take a championship seriously you have a World Championship.

The World Baseball Classic is nothing but a very poorly done exhibition that should be killed. I know if I owned a team none of my players would be allowed to play in it.

Good question mate. Yes it is an old question, but as we can all still keep seeing, it seems as if most people indeed still believe that there is only outer space beyond the U.S. borders.

Just as they do in baseball, NBA, NFL and whatever other team sport it might be, players and fans make reference to the "world champions" for having won a league championship.

I think Major League Baseball in a way represents the world since the best players, aside from the Cubans still on the island, play in this league. You have players from the Americas, Asia and pretty soon maybe a few Europeans or wherever baseball is played will join some teams. A few latino players are even in the hall of fame such as my fellow Panamanian Rod Carew and probably Mariano Rivera. Even though players from many parts of the world play in the league it should not be called World Series. It seems as arrogance to me...... only in the U.S..... I can't think of any other country whose domestic league champions dare to call themselves or are referred to as "World Champion".

Cheers.

The World Series began when baseball was only played in America. No one else knew about it, so therefore America WAS the baseball "world". That's about all I know, but I'm sure if you googled it, you'd find exactly what you're looking for.

Its simple. When the World Series began over one hundred years ago America WAS the entire baseball world. It has nothing to do with American arrogance. BTW, this stopped being a clever question about 20 years ago.

Actually, there's 1 canadian team (Toronto). Remember, Montreal moved to Washington to become the Nationals.

Yes, that is true.

We invented the sport, and when the WS was first played, we were the only people who played baseball, so it was the "World's Series". The name has remained, and I think people would be mad if they tried to change it.
