As many as they need.

Depends on the requirements of the enterprise and the applications that the servers are running. I have recently built a solution for a customer with 16 high spec quad core servers. This was only for their call centre.

Well, there is no limit to the number of SERVERS you can have. Just one, money! I know of an office with 10 users and 12 servers.. doesn't make any sense to me but some Microsoft "expert" told the office they needed a server for each application they wanted to run based upon Microsoft's Best Practices so they got 12 servers. One for each application program!!

Dumb, but it does work, just an administrative nightmare which pays the guy a nice monthly fee for administrative services.. They could have done this with one server - although since they have a web server two would have been just fine!

The truth is you need to evaluate what you need your "servers" to do for you and put in the number needed to accomplish the job. Maybe one for each department, maybe only ONE, could be 16 - two for each department? Again, you have to assess your needs and build accordingly.
