There are three possibilities:
1) call him what his friends call him
2) call him something that is unique to you and your relationship
3) call him something generic, like babe or sweetie or honey. Very often, someone seeing other people will choose a generic so that they are not caught in the mistake of using the wrong name

you shouldn't just call him a random name.
you should give it time to find the right name. Like when you're spending time with him and he does something all the time that makes you laugh or smile call him that.
(ex: like if the way he sniffs his nose makes you smile, call him sniffy. hahah though sniffy may be a pretty gay name)
