Curious and thinking about trying some, I hate horses -- but then again I might not be able to stomach eating one anyway. Ugly messy things!

I found other questions but no one seems to answer SERIOUSLY.

Brown eyes do you think biting a freshly killed cow would give you an accurate representation of how a steak would taste like? I don't

TJB:: Thanks for the only real answer!

And sorry if I upset you since you seem cool, I just think if we eat cows there's no reason not to eat horses. And pigs are probably more intelligent than horses too but we eat them - I remember watching a thing on BBC about these pigs that could play computer games (no not Americans lol)

Horse meat tastes pretty darn good! Horse meat is lean, protein-rich, finely textured, bright red, firm, and more so horses are immune to BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy). Tough meat cuts must be cooked long enough to tenderize connective tissue (collagen), or marinated before cooking to ensure both flavor and tenderness. It's just like any meat, if fed to be tender, than it is tender...there are always parts of any animal that is more tender than others

They just closed the last equine slaughter plant in Texas, but ironically, it ISN'T illegal to be in possession of horse meat intended for human consumption, go figger. So, there really is nothing illegal about having the meat for human consumption, but it's illegal to slaughter them? Figure that one out.

I feel that people should get off their "HIGH HORSE" and stop judging others about how they wish to eat, unless it's your horse that is in question. There are other civilizations that cringe when they consider that we eat beef. Being a companion animal is irrelevant, as irrelevant as sheep, pigs, cows, lambs, dogs and cats......all of which are also kept as companion animals. I prefer not to eat dogs and cats, but I don't attempt to judge others that do, it's their business, as long as it isn't my animal that they are considering adding to their favorite recipe.

And yes, I do love horses, always have, always will. Would I hesitate to eat horse meat, no. Would I hesitate to eat the meat of MY horse? Maybe, if it wasn't a life and death situation where my family needed the food, then....it's a totally different story...people are people, animals are animals, no matter how we can get attached to them.

EDIT****************** I have no idea why all of you are so defensive about this question, I really don't. If you have never tasted horse meat, then why are you answering the question at all? The question was NOT, "should we eat horse meat"...it was, what does it taste like...if you haven't eaten it, you certainly have no expertise from which to draw an opinion nor an answer...

I agree with Lisa M.,having traveled all over Europe I had a chance to not only learn new cultures, but to also get a chance to eat the local favorites.Even to this day in some parts of Eastern Europe they will raise horses for not only food but for milk too because it's less expensive than a cow in the long run to raise, and they can actualy work the horse easier than the cow.I lived 6 years on a German farm, and it was truly an eye opening experience to see just how much they do things different than we do.But would I think about raising and eating one of our horses???? Not at all.

I don't believe horses deserve to be put on a pedestal above chickens, pigs, sheep, & cows, & I believe that Deer/Kudu/Springbok/Gazelle are far prettier than horses. My neighbor keeps chickens as pets & sheep are pretty cute & taste horrid. Rabbits & ducks are adorable, but if offered their meat I'd eat it, because it tastes good.

I've often wondered what horse, snake, alligator, human, & even animals I adore & would never personally hurt taste like; not an unexpected thought process for someone who cooks for a living.

well. see the thing about posting that question here is, here in the us people get all freaked out when you start talking about horsemeat. horsemeat is not a generally accepted form of food here in the us becuase we have so many animal activist groups protesting against it. even though horses are slaughtered no different then cows. we don't have slaughter houses anymore in the us. which has caused a rise in the black market price. (rolls eyes) so now people are sneaking into peoples feilds and buchering their horse. go figure. you are much more likly to find out what horsemeat tastes like if you ask non u.s. citizens. most of us have not had horsemeat. i do know this, only becuase i know a cowboy who has had it. it's kind of a toss up between pork and beef in taste. sort of like beef jerky with taryiaki seasoning. wow. in the time i wrote that you attracted alot of pissed off people.

I actually love horse in any form. Under saddle, free-roaming, or on the table. I've had 3 mares that I was totally in love with and they died of natural causes, so I'm not a horse-hater. I'm just a realist.
It has gotten difficult to find horses that are actually edible because of deworming chemicals getting into the meat and staying there. It's right there on the box on the list of precautions.
I lived in Sweden in the late 70s, and every hamburger made there was made from horsemeat; best burgers I've ever had. Flavor depends on the age and condition of the horse. Young ones are mild-tasting, sweet and tender, while old ones are tough and gamey, just like venison.
If the horse in question is slaughtered humanely, the product rates right along with beef, pork, poultry, etc.
I think it's hypocritical to have a conniption fit about eating horsemeat when people eat other animals. Deer are beautiful, too, but we eat them, right?

My husband says they taste a lot like Veal, but better. Depends on the quality and how it is cooked. In Belgium, horses are raised for a specific taste, not just any horse meat is OK. They are raised a lot like cattle and certain ages are preferred, etc. One draft breed is raised for meat, I think it's the boulainis? (sp?)or another B word. I won't eat it, but my German horse loving friends often do. It's made into pferdewurst here. Any quality of meat can be made into sausage. However, just because you hate an animal doesn't mean you'd eat it?! I don't hate cows or pigs... I'd be a cannibal if I ate animla I hate.

Here is what I think. Each animal has a purpose. Pigs, and cows are for eating, cows and goats are for milking, chickens and ducks are for eggs, horses and donkeys are carrying us.

I have never tasted horse, and never will, but just becouls I one some and can't emagine ever eating them. I an not really against it, id care people eat dog, but I never could, sorry its true, just cuz they're cuter than cows they get more care.

Horse meat isn't too bad. I have had it before. Its kind of a cross between Dolphin and Panda Bear. With a slit hint of Spotted Owl!
