This government likes to talk the talk on global warming and climate change and the threat we all face. Now they want to build a third runway at Heathrow that will create the same amount of carbon emissions that some countries produce on their own. Should we all just give up on recycling and paying green taxes and trying to cut our own carbon footprint if this goes ahead? It seems ridiculous to me.

PS I posted this in the environment section but I don't know how many people look at that one so am reposting it here as it seems to be more active. Apologies for the duplicate post. Would like your thoughts and opinions. Thanks.

Hello Johnnie....I am one of the residents whose house will have to go once the third runway comes into being and I am sure you know what that means. You must have seen the demonstrations in the three villages but do you really and honestly think that the Government will bother what we think?Do you think it really cares about thecarbon emmissions? I personally think that they dont really have much alternative even though I don't like the idea at all. The country has to progress and if the third runway does not come into being then Amsterdam will take first place in the largest airport in the world. I believe an announcement is to be made today and I will almost guarantee it will be in favour of the runway.Oh No I will not be pleased about it but there is nothing you or I can do. Demonstrations will not be of any use.If you think that you can bring BAA to bankruptcy more fool you and your people. I stand to lose a lot by the runway being made....I will have to downgrade to a smaller house.I will have to look for another house even though I don't particularly want to move from a house that I find very convenient in every way possible. School nearby, airport nearby as we travel often, shops nearby and the closeness of four underground stations and a fantastic bus service. I will be tremendously upset but you and I will go down as being just a number in the amount of protestors in history. We are not important...it is the progress of the country that is more important for the other people who live here and for the new generation to come.

Yes. If we need a 3rd runway then we need it, end of. Whats all the fuss about? Just ignore all this utter nonsense of global warming and carbon foot prints.

NOTE: To those people who live close to the Airport and are complaining. If you buy a house close to an Airport, what do you expect? That's the reason you got the house a lot cheaper than in other areas. Shut up or move out!.

No. I live near Heathrow and already have to put up with constant flights going over my house, starting at 4am. God knows what it will be like with a third runway. My mother-in-law will lose her house altogether as she lives where the new runway is to be built. The Government know about the concerns of the local people and about the environmental issue but they don't care. They want this runway built and sod the rest of us.

Oh no... a few more planes are going to destroy the earth, i think people should be more focused on things like building fusion reactor power plants and electric cars powered by the fusion reactors, there, self-sustaining clean energy! then maybe tackle things like making planes fly without jets, global warming solved, then we just have to worry about the natural side of global warming, which shouldn't be happening yet!

yes

i think heath row needs a new runway.........

effective air traffic - in and out - of a country is important for economic reasons

it will also ease the congestion elsewhere in the air transport system in UK

if it makes air travel more convenient than i am for it.

people need and want to fly............making it difficult will not necessarily stop people needing or wanting to do it

EDIT
there are huge business benefits to living near Heathrow airport which are enjoyed by the local residents.......the cost of their homes are high because it is a desirable place to be with quick links to London and Europe (by air), there are thousands and thousands of people employed at this airport and these people live locally...............

no gain without pain..........

I think the answer to you question is, yes, because if we don't keep up with the world, then the world will leave us behind and we cannot afford that. I also heard a good argument for it because it could help reduce emissions, but far to much to relate hear, it was on the BBC news from BEA and Virgin actually talking together.

This is obviously in line with the announcement made by Gordon Brown a few days ago stating they would cut carbon emmissions by 80%.

I no longer have any faith in this Government to have any coherent policy.

Forget carbon emissions, saw a brilliant documentary, where they estimate there will be NO jet fuel in 4 years, so we will all be staying home.

I'm confused - how many have they got already?
Terminal 5 is opening next march or something...don't know how many runways that is though.

Your quite right. But, it makes little or no matter what we think.
They will do what makes the most cash footprint.
