I would be happy if I can join your new group. :)

I think you make good points about how a discussion group can give some people who want them another way to communicate more deeply and also not have trolls polluting.

I also have a discussion group called Sigy's Saloon which is more of a place for talking about social issues and current evenrts in the world and the future. It's configured for the privacy of members to prevent trolling and spamming and stalking and the members are on the honour system instead of a book of rules and moderation and that has worked very well. :)

Well, I think it is good that you are creating your own forum as a positive step to creating the space that you want, but I have to say that I have issues in general with moderation. Which isn't to say I find YA ideal either.

To answer you points sequentially.

1) Yes, I do care about making points on this forum, as that is the only way I can have unlimited questions and answers. Beyond level five I don't really care though.

2) Questions fall off the front page, they are effectively expiring to all but your network or very assiduous forum followers. By the time stuff is 3 days old, unless it is very heavily starred, the responses have faded to a trickle if not completely anyway.

3) Questions aren't deleted here, they go into resolved questions, unless they breach community guidelines. I do see the merits of a bulletin board type system though.

4) That isn't how moderated forums work. Members might post but the forum owner has complete autonomy over refusing and deleting posts. Also, by definition, undeleted posts become content, so aside from the moderator function, that is just self evident.

5) Couldn't care less so long as when I submit it, it gets posted up.

6) Hard to say though as mentioned before, I do like the bulletin board form though.

Back to your headline question, the problem for me here is "who decides".

When does a viewpoint become disrespectful?
What about mature opinions and ideas from young people, I believe there should be space for that too, but it's your forum.
What is deep discussion? All seems quite relative to me.

Maybe some food for thought.

Do you want questions and answers that make sense, with deep discussion only between mature respectful adults?

that is a very tall order change the word adult for people

and i agree that age does not mean sense or responsibility
most positive input for the environment comes from kids
and here in Mexico they are also the largest part of my audience
there should not be any age restriction
only a dumb or repetitive one

Second Twilight's points, all good, and well-presented.

For the intellectual project(s) you envision, a gated bulletin board ( + posted minutes of governed chat sessions) ( + shared correspondence files) ( + peer journal) would be ideal. It's not an impossible software problem.

Y! Groups doesn't cut it.

Actually, sometimes I just wanna hang with the grandkids and play doll, trucks, and make simple, but truly honest conversation. Loaded with "I love yous" and hugs.
