I had dwarf puffers for several years with java ferns. I think they work well because the puffer tank needs so much maintance. Just tie the java fern rhizome (that green horizontal stick at the bottom of the plant) onto a rock with some thread and it will attach itself in a couple of weeks. When you clean the tank you can pull the plant/rock out and go to town without having to worry about smashing any roots. Rinse any algae off the plant in the sink and pop it back in. I've even been able to use a toothbrush to gently clean the leaves without any ill effects.

I've found java fern does best in medium light conditions but they can adjust to dim or bright lights. They don't need any special treatment. Everyone always says they grow slow but for some reason they really took off in the puffer tank. I had to prune the things constantly to keep them from taking over!

Good luck with those puffers!

they dont really need plants, but hornwort is VERY forgiving and can handle alittle saltness that brackishwater needs.

Also mangroves in you are working in a low water level tank.

Hornwort really doesnt require anything special.
