This sounds like typical "character education". If character is about doing the right thing regardless of rewards, then what is the purpose of talking about how it might enhance careers?
Enhancing your career might be a great result and reward but character is not about reward. Neither is character about fear. A person of character does the right thing without regard to fear or hope of reward.
People of character have had their careers ruined by being honest. Honesty doesn't always help, in fact, it often doesn't.
I'm sure the teacher asking the question wants you to say that moral values such as honesty will build for you a reputation such that employers and everyone else will value your work and trust you. The problem is that it is a reputation of honesty that enhances your career, not actually being honest.
Real character does not concern itself with building reputation; reputation can be (but not necessarily) a byproduct of character.
Character is doing the right thing for the right reason and disregard the consequences (but still be aware of the consequences) either good or bad.

Every action and thought of ours leaves an impression in our mind. These impressions are not obvious on the surface, they are sufficiently strong to work beneath the surface, subconsciously. What we are every moment is determined by the sum total of these impressions on the mind. Each man's character is determined by the sum total of these impressions. If good impressions prevail, the character becomes good, if bad, it becomes bad. If a man continuously hears bad words, thinks bad thoughts, does bad actions, his mind will be full of bad impressions and vice verse. So in the childhood we have to tell moral values and we have to build the character by telling moral and spiritual stories and other things. In Bible Prob:22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it'. The impressions made by parents and teachers are more important in future life of the person. If a person do an evil deed and the court decides to punish , that punishment must be given to the parents and all the teachers who taught that person. So teaching moral values definitely effect the personality. The moral , ethical and spiritual education given to a person from the age 9 months to 16 years will decide the future life. So foundation is very very important in our life. That decide our future.

In the traditional family, as it has been constituted in western civilization and practiced for over 5,000 years, a mother AND father are mandated to teach their offspring how to live in an honorable way and to, thus, strengthen the society, in which they live, and to survive. Therefore, it is a fundamental notion, in western civ. that the family is the bedrock foundation of society.
The health and strength of a society is then the strength of the family, and what they teach their children; how they mold them to continue living and prospering in that society.
Our society (American and to a broader degree) western civ. is today crumbling, not because of the Muslims. They are basically pretty very weak. When an extremely small unit of our Special Forces goes up against those people in combat it is a 50:1 kill ratio, minimum. America's military, like our society, was formed on a Christian/Jewish bedrock and those men now fighting were raised (for the most part) with the high morals, and standards, America demands of its warriors. They give it gladly.
On the other side of the equation: The black community. 70+% single mother pregnacy; our prisions are over 50% African/American; gansta rap is making millions glorifying hatred of women, murder, robbery, rape. Yet, they blame the WHITE man for all their troubles. The scary thing about that is, many of them believe it. Eventhough, several of the most successful black men and women in America (the world actually) tell them the truth, they (the blacks) prefer the lie. They are, of course, doomed but their "leaders' Jessie and Al reenforce the status quo. That's how they make their money. The "leader" who pump these lies into their children and selling them poision. What "father" does that?
How to build character in children? Have it first and show it in how YOU live your life. The children are watching.
Why? So you will continue to have brave men willing to join the Marines, Army, Navy and go fight for your freedom. The other option is to lose it all and need to go buy a prayer rug from Osama the rug salesman.
There are millions of people in America and the EU, who hate society in America because of how it is formulated on a Captialist system of economics and the Christian/Jewish faith which constitutes it. Nancy Polosi, Harry Reed and Frank Murtha (for examples) all want for America the same things that Fidel Castro, Kim Jan Yil (sp?) and Osama bin Ladin want . . . the distruction of the Capitalist State - America. They are selling their children down the proverbial drain. The only thing now keeping America out of the clutches of Socialism is the remaining foundation on which our our founding fathers built this society: LIBERTY.
I digress. But I'm not sorry.
How can it help you? No one wants to do business with a crooked businessman, Doctor, Lawyer, child, mother, father. People just do not want to deal with bad people. If they do, then they are bad and should be avoided.
How much better off would be a black kid be if avoided a person who said, "If you study hard and make good grades you's being too white"? They would probably go on to be a great MD or businessman/woman. THAT'S why it's important. Or, "Less go jack that car." Walk away . . . Run away. Of course, if their is no strong father in the house to teach a young man to do that . . . they wind up in prison or (if we're talking about a woman) pregnant.
Probably more than you wanted to know.
