Deserves to be. With all due respect, Steve McClaren is simply not good enough. He was naive enough to opt for a four-striker attack against Sevilla, in the Uefa Cup FINAL with Middlesbrough, when he had already used the tactic twice against Basel and Steaua, who were not good enough to even post a fight for Boro back then and now. Knowing fully what a risk it would have been, McClaren threw four men up front for the third game in a row, and the well-prepared Sevilla, having watched two full 90-minute videos of Boro in action with that formation, pounced on the opportunity with glee and posted a 4-0 demolition of the English side to smash the record for biggest margin of victory in a European final.
Then, when Robinson and Lampard were struggling for form throughout the qualifying campaign, McClaren chose not to replace them with fresh talent like Carson and Barry, letting England waste chance after chance and before long the Three Lions were fourth. Still convinced that the experience the senior members hold would make a difference, McClaren stuck with them and England clawed back to regain the right to control their own fate against Croatia yesterday. In this crucial game where experience was crucial, McClaren threw Carson and a host of inexperienced youngsters into the deep end against a rampant and well-drilled Croatia, paying the price when individual mistakes by Carson cost England their place in the finals. Robinson facing a confidence crisis? Put James up front, a highly experienced goalkeeper, in form for Portsmouth and played in a hundred qualifiers before, and Carson on the bench to learn from him, not the other way round.
Carson is not a terrible goalkeeper, he's the hottest goalkeeping talent England has seen in many years and it is not his fault that some blockhead decided to make him look stupid by giving him only his second cap in such an important match. England were not knocked out, they failed to qualify and that makes them not good enough to make it to the top 32 in Europe. McClaren must accept full responsibility for his mistakes. His job is to get results with the players he had, meet the expectation of the entire English population, the whole nation's hopes were pinned on him, and failing to meet those expectations means he has failed, terribly, in his job.

Mistake 1:He played an inexperienced keeper
Mistake 2: He started with phillips when he should of started with beckham.
Mistake 3: 2 down and we still finished the first half playing 5-4-1
Mistake 4: Continued to play with Lampard (why???)
You could also say that he has never done anything to warrant being given the job in the first place.
Harry Redknapp please step up.

Why the manager always the one who pays the price for a punch of spoiled Millionaires ?
the players are resposable because they didn't prepare themselve for the game and they shouldn't J*** O** the day before the game period !

He said "judge me after 12 games". Well judgement time came and he knew the outcome and still didn't have the decency to resign. He wanted his multi million payout. What a shame the tosser got it!!

To be expected and thoroughly deserved, but what makes his tenure even worse is the fact that he gets paid £2.5 million to leave. How insulting is that
