Hi people I have just bought a briggs and stratton mower from ebay that is not running well. It will start up after about a 5/6 pulls but then only runs for about a minute and then dies. Its like it is only using the primed fuel then running out, it has had a new plug. Im no mechanic but do you think it could be a blockage of some sort??? or something else Please help any hints would be helpful.

Hi Mandy. Yes Briggs & Stratton are a good engine and are probably the most popular (because they are reliable) engine fitted to a wide range of mowers. Personally I prefer the Hayter range of mowers and the older ones are just as good as the new ones, so a used Hayter might be an idea. Mountfield are pretty good brand though. Hope that helps a little.

The most likely cause of hard starting is the carburetor. It has a diaphram carb setting on top of the gas tank. It is time to rebuild the carb. It is an easy job and the rebuild kit will come with instructions. Just watch how the springs and rods attach to the carb. A digital picture may help before you take it apart. As far as rust on the flywheel goes that is bunk. Magnets don't care if there is rust.

N.Cognito,s advice sounds pretty good, I'm not familier with you'r exact engine, but, if you were to get some starter fluid and spray some into the carb. intake (it should have some type of filter you may have to remove first) prior to starting and it aids in starting ,that would be a clear indicator that it is a fuel flow problem,if you are the least bit mechanical it is not that hard to rebuild/clean the carb.

No spark, no run.
Lay spark plug on engine fins and have someone pull string.
You should have a fat blue spark.
Make sure cap is making good connection with coil wire.
DO NOT hold plug while your buddy jerks on line.
If mower is a piece of junk, get a new one.

Now go drink a beer and relax.
