To me it sounds like you have a great relationship. I wouldn't worry about it if it is only a few months that you will be away from each other.
You can always keep in touch on a daily basis through emails, IM's, and telephone. Email him about your day. Go into details. Let him know every nitty gritty thing that you experience, just like you would do if you were with him face to face. Besides, you won't be completely out of sight. I am sure he has pictures of you, and him together.. If not then before you leave, how about taking a real nice picture together, buy a nice frame for it, and give it to him as a gift.
I know that I have 2 children that live abroad. We are in touch daily. I know every thing that they do, and visa verse. We share our experiences, feelings, sad times, happy times, It is almost as if we are together.
So a couple of months will not hurt your relationship, you might be out of sight, but not out of mind.
Good luck on your career break. Do not worry, your wonderful man will be at your side when you return
Edit: If he is not at your side when you return then, you lost nothing. Because your relationship was not what you thought it was to begin with, and eventually he would have moved on. You cannot hold a man down like a ball and chain, once the chain is cut he is history..

It depends on the guy. But you can keep on calling home and talk to him, email him when you away, just contact him often to show him that you always think of him, and see if he thinks of you. I think couple month wouldn't be that long, and it will over soon. If where you work is not far from home, then try to fly back during holidays or something.

Depends on the guy, it took 2 weeks for my exboyfriend but I know a girl, she's studying in Germany for a year it's been 2 months now and he's still crazy about her and visits her as often as he can.

support each other immensely? Yeah, that sounds pretty serious, I don't think you should be concerned about losing him to distance if it is the situation you say it is.

I think that would mostly depend on how he feels about you...if he truly loves you and you keep in contact with him then I'm sure he can wait for you...if not then he's not really the person you thought he was
