...drive to the emergency room right now. I'm alone in the house, but my cousin is next door. It started when I had a cold glass of water as soon as I came in from work two hours ago, I've been told that could cause it. I can't think of anything else to do but drink some alcohol, here's the catch. I'm having a moral issue with it because I'm a recovering addict and NA recommends I don't use alcohol even if my thing used to be cocaine not alcohol. I've been clean for over two years, but I have had a drink here and there, and have been able to stop without going on a bender. So I guess the question is will alcohol ease my heartbeat, or at least relax me? How much should I have? Rum, wine, what? S#it! If it's going to help put my heart back in gear I don't really have any moral issues but stay alive. Please help.

One of my atriums is a bit big in comparison to the rest of my heart.

I am a cardiology nurse and have never heard of alcohol as a treatment for atrial fib. try bearing down like you are trying to have a bowel movement to try to break yourself out of it. if your heart rate is really fast, you are dizzy, clammy or you blood pressure is really low you need medical attention. call your cardiologist he/she may want you to take some extra doses of the medication you are probably already on. (like cardizem, diltiazem, metoprolol, lopressor, digoxin) hope you are already on coumadin.

The side effects of alcohol include heart problems, as you are predisposed to this condition and currently having symptoms it is quite possible that consuming ethanol could make the problem worse than it already is.

Alcohol can trigger attacks of afib in people who are predisposed to this condition. Thus, we'd expect that your taking alcohol now will just make it worse.

it might be a withdrawal effect. try to have a checkup with a cardiologist and follow what is advised to you

you sound more like you're having a panic attack. i would seek medical supervision anyhow if this keeps up.
