I want to take my little boy, who turns 1 on 30 November, to meet Santa at the Cardiff "WInter Wonderland" Grotto but I think he'll just cry and be scared of some weird man with a big white beard! what do you think?

lol @ mrknowitall - I was offered a job as a "Santa's helper" at the Grotto this yearm I turned it down as there are problems with childcare for my son, but I did have visions of screaming children, mopping up puddles and clearing up when they threw up etc! Loooovely job . . .!

No. Babies get freaked out by Santa and it's a usually a dreadful experience for everybody all around. Bringing a child to something like that benefits no one except maybe whatever pleasure the parent gets out of it. The child is obviously too young to know what's going on.

Why not take him to the grotto and look at all the decorations and lights. My grand daughter loved Father Christmas from a very young age where my grandson was frightened. See how he is around all the decorations and what you feel like. If you want to take him then do so, he doesn't have to sit on Santas knee, you can hold him.

You have to prepare your child before the meeting, try to explain who Santa is and what he does and how he looks like. If you find a picture of Santa you can also show that to your child before you go. Be positive and natural, and when you go to the meeting, please make sure you do not run away from the situation. Let the child decide whether to sit on Santa's lap or not! Good luck!

I worked as a photographer for several years, taking pics of kids on Santa's lap. Little kids, under two or so, were usually just frightened. They don't understand what it's all about. Santa didn't like it either, because they often were wet. This was in the US, but I think one-year-olds are the same everywhere.

My son absolutely howled when he first saw Santa! I think one is maybe a bit young but it really depends on the child. Maybe show him some pictures of Santa first? I think when they get to 2 or 3 that's when they really get into Santa and the whole Christmas thing.

I did with my children, I think it's really nice to look back on the photos of them with Father Christmas. My son was only 3 months old when he first 'met' Santa, of course he cant remember it, but the photo is of him and his sister and I think it's a lovely reminder of his first Christmas!

He's too young to gain anything positive from the experience. This will be meaningless to him and may well upset him. Wait another year, at least by then he may have a little understanding. But my son was four by the time he'd go anywhere near the old fella !!

I really don't wish to be unkind but I think taking him to see Santa is more for your pleasure than his. He is too young to understand and might well be frightened. I'd advise you to wait until he is at least three, then he will have an idea what is going on and may be excited by the idea.

In a word "No". I think you answered your own question and I think it has more to do with what the parent wants than the child. All responsible parents want what is best for our children but your baby just ain't old enough to understand what the hell is happening and in these days of psycho - babble and new phobias being diagnosed at the drop of a hat I would be inclined to hold off for a year or five until he is, at least, aware of what is happening. Best wishes with your child, you have lots of years ahead of you to inflict embarrasments on him. LOL
