As a child, I spent a great deal of time alone and also had an "imaginary friend". As soon as I began going to preschool and spent more time with other children, I focused less on her. I'm sure it will be the same for your daughter.

I could understand, as a parent, it may freak you out a bit, but please don't stop your child from talking to him. When I think back, having my imaginary friend fulfilled many emotional needs I had at the time as well as kept me from being completely bored. It was not destructive behavior nor something that affected me negatively.

I look back fondly at the memories I have of connecting to my imaginary friend. I think if my mother had forced me to stop, it would have created a hurt and a distrust for my mother that I would have carried for a long time.

Well, if she HONESTLY believes she's talking to him, she needs to get checked out by a doctor to see if she's hearing things. IF she's REALLY young, though (maybe about 7 or under), she is still in the stage where imaginary friends are common and kids still sometimes do have a hard time separating fact from fantasy. IT may very well be that there's nothing seriously wrong and she will outgrow this very quickly. DON'T harass her about it; most kids just outgrow this phase on their own.

But yeah, have her see the doctor if you really do think it is something rather serious.

As long as her imaginary friend is not hurting her why make an issue of it?

An excellent question! If she is very young, she could be talking to a spiritual friend. Perhaps you should explore this possibility, as such a thing is not as uncommon as one might think.

Good luck.

That is very normal behavior. Don't make too big a thing out of it, eventually she will drop it on her own.
