True. The U.S. was supporting China. But Japan did not attack Hawaii in an attempt to take Hawaii or expand against the U.S.
Japan was bogged down in its war with China. It needed materials and supplies to win. With the U.S. drastically reducing (I can't remember if it was an embargo) it's exports to Japan, Japan had to act. The goal was not to bring the U.S. into the war. But to hurt us badly enough that Japan could consolidate it's power in the Pacific before we could recover and that it would not be worth the fight. Their hope was that we would not fight back.

The Japanese attempted to expand their empire being such a physically small nation. They knew that to do it, they had to face the US. The US was already unofficially attempting to thwart their expansion into China. At the time, the US was allied to China. Japan was at war with China already.

In Japans attempt at expansion, they began against the US by attacking the US Naval Forces at Hawaii.
