First let us recall that menstruation technically refer to the shedding of the uterine lining between ovulations. So to say, any animal with an ability to ovulate most likely has to undergo the process of menstruation.

In case of mammals, NOT ALL have overt (externally visible) menstruation as humans do. Many menstruate covertly (externally invisible) reabsorbing the uterine lining after it is shed so that bleeding is not externally visible.

Overt menstruation has been noticed to occur in most nonhuman primates, in marsupials, tree shrews, flying lemurs, bats, dogs, elephants, etc.

As those mammals we know to menstruate are not all closely related to one another, we can assume that the process is occurring to many and that nearly all female mammals menstruate in some fashion.

(I had myself seen my dog menstruate, what a mess of blood drops!)

First of all, menstruation in human females IS a natural state. What is (slightly) unnatural is the length of the controlled cycle created by the pill.

All (female!) mammals menstruate in some way or another - the precise moment of menstruation compared with ovulation will vary as will the discharge. With dogs it is noticeable and on average every 6 months. With guinea pigs it is not noticeable (except in their behaviour) and is on average every sixteen days. Horses are receptive on average every three weeks, but only for part of the year.

They are called mammals not because they menstruate, but because they suckle their young (mammata or mammary glands are breasts).

Humans and apes are the only animals to have a true menstruation where the lining of the uterus is shed.
In other mammals the discharge is related to ovulation, when the egg is released and is a signal to the male that the female is receptive. eg in dogs.

You have to remeber that menstruating in a human female is a unnatural state. The are even diseases that come from menstruating lik endometriosis.

The female reproductive system is made to only menstruate now and then and produce babies all the time.

Good question. I don't think they do. They have managed to evolve out of it. It is way to energy costly to be doing that.
