In a previous post, I described some problems I am having with public speaking and asked for advice. Many suggested improvement comes simply with experience. However, one person gave a particularly interesting suggestion:

"I force myself into situations where my confidence and bravery is tested, so that I can get used to the associated feelings."

Unfortunately, I do not debate often or speak publically often, so it is hard for me to improve. This person recommends forcing oneself into situations where confidence and bravery are tested.

What kind of situations can I force myself into to improve my public speaking? What things can I do to increase my experience?

The best thing would be to take a class in it. You will have to do a speech about once a week. Then you'll get plenty of practice. It's true the more you have to do it, the easier it will get. Once you have learned to overcome your fears, it will be like riding a bike. You'll always have at least some of the skills. Just remember, no one really cares how you do. They are just thinking of their own lives. So just have fun and be dynamic when you talk. No one will remember what happens and really no one cares. So just do your best!

Well I don't know about that. But I was nervous when I was in High School speaking in front of my classmates. But when I took a speech class in college I changed. And the biggest change was just being well prepared in what I was discussing in front of the class. I was well prepared in high school but still nervous. I think the difference in college was they were not people I knew. And so I think talking in front of strangers is easier than talking in front of a group of your classmates.

Also I heard about Toastmasters is an organization where public speaking is required. you might look into that.

Maybe going down to City Hall and voicing an opinion is another way. Calling in on a talk show. I remember when Challenge blew up and I actually had a call on CSPAN and I was nervous but I got my comment across. Those are ideas. I hope they help.

TEach CPR - that's a good quick way to get in front of people. But the real trick to public speaking is to stop being self-conscious and force yourself to be other-conscious - think about your audience, not yourself. It really is all about them, not you. They're not there to judge you, they're there to learn from you. A good public speaker is as interested in them getting their needs met as they are.
