Short hair looks better on older women because their hair gets stringy and ragged looking as they age. Salt and pepper hair is really unattractive looking, especially when it's long. Leave the longer hair to young women because it looks better on them.

It's not a politician thing, it is a woman of a certain age thing. Short hair is easier to maintain and, when you dye your hair as much as I imagine HIllary Clinton or Elizabeth Dole or any other female of that age in the limelight does, the length can get ugly, frizzy and damaged-looking. Not good at all, especially when people are constantly snapping your picture.
Almost every woman I know who is over 45 or so has shorter hair. It honeslty just looks better on most women of that age and older.

Yes, and to think female politicians only constitute a tiny minority of ALL politicians. Just think about all those men sporting short hair TOO.
You need to understand the reality of the aging process:
as people age, the texture of their hair changes. Hair quality degenerates - as does skin quality. Long hair that bounced with body and lustre on a person at age 25 - will hang limply on the same person now aged 55. Most politicians - as we are aware - are middle-aged.

Probably for the same reason male politicians have short hair-easy to take care of, conservative looking, and business-like.

I see nothing psychological about it; what I see is it's much easier to take care of; doesn't take so much time as longer hair would; style and brush that sort of thing.
