Fight Club, Memento, ... I for one think that the most thought provoking kind of movies come with a crazy person in tact, or someone who thinks that person is in a a way all kinds of crazy? LOL xp... but it's pretty true. like the jacket, flightplan, the butterfly effect, the I inside, identity, the hitchhiker, the sixth sense, Shawshank Redemption, Schindler's List, A Clockwork Orange, Donnie Darko, the Shining, Doppelganger, Sleeping with the Enemy, Silence of the Lambs, The Omen, The Attic, Disturbia, The Forgotten, Stay, Secret Window, The talented Mr. Ripley, and of course no one can screw with a classic, Psycho.
Can anyone say movie fanatic much? xp

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)~The discussions and arguments started at its first showing, and they haven't stopped yet.
A Clockwork Orange (1971)~ditto
Donnie Darko~It certainly demands that the viewer think. Step 1) Watch movie. Step 2) Try to connect the dots or whatever else you're supposed to do to have it all make sense. Step 3) Watch movie again. Repeat as often as necessary.
Taxi Driver (1976)~This was a thought-provoking film way back when it was released. Theoretically, it was supposed to smash through the audience's desire for violence, but this definitely backfired. This was in-your-face acts of mayhem. It did succeed in turning off the desire for more in some people; unfortunately, those alligators in others' minds~the creatures that Stephen King speaks/writes of~ wanted much more. "Taxi Driver" unfortunately whet appetites for increasing displays of violence.
Hard Candy (2006)~I won't even begin to debate this one.
The Ring~I heard about this one long before I saw it on a movie channel. I expected to find it OK but just another horror film translated from a Japanese film. Only a day or so passed before I watched it again, and I've viewed it many times since. I didn't find it scary, but it is quite intriguing, with many details and hints to be noted. I was pleased when the sequel turned out well though it's not as disturbing as the first one.
The Blind Beast (Japanese 1969)~Toward the end, I found this film so alarming that I hit the mute button and paid more attention to my laptop screen than the TV screen. As difficult as it was to watch, I lasted till the end. I considered taping it when it was aired again later that morning but decided not to. However, I could not stop thinking about it. Finally, I caved in and, when it was aired yet again, taped it. I haven't watched it a second time. It's as if I'm daring myself to do so. Yes, it's that powerful, perplexing, visually stunning but alarming.
Requiem for a Dream~It's a must-see anti-drug message film that you might wish you hadn't watched. I went in unprepared, as a fan of Jared Leto. I also am an Ellen Burstyn fan. I did NOT know what I was going to endure in this horrific film. It's so powerful because you LIKE these people and care about them; they're too nice to have this happen to them! Of course, that's why this could be used to hammer home the words "Just say no!" The painful, dreadful images have a lasting effect. I feel as if I survived an ordeal, and I have yet to revisit it. As with "The Blind Beast", I have a copy, but I'm not certain I'll ever have the nerve to watch it again.

Funny Games - this movie involves the audience and makes you a part of the violence like no other movie I have seen. One character even comments that 'they can't die now, we haven't reached feature length yet' it really makes you think about the part the audience plays in the screening of violence. Highly recommended.
Memento forces the viewer to concentrate and think about the story - look away for a moment and you may miss a vital clue.
Crash is one of the most powerful movies to come out of Hollywood in recent years. You could live almost anywhere in the world and draw parallels with this amazing movie.
And finally, nothing I have seen has moved me as much as Hotel Rwanda. This true story teaches so much about the good and bad in human nature that I really think it should be shown in schools as part of the national curriculum. And you won't hear me say that very often.

There are some good answers already. Maybe also It's A Wonderful Life - looks like it might already have been given - it does make you think about what contribution you make to the world with the life you are given. Mr Smith Goes To Washington, another Frank Capra film with James Stewart, makes you think about the value of freedom and not taking it for granted. They might be older films, but they are still relevant today, and not just in the US. Very good question.

Stigmata, i love this film i not really religous but for some reason this film made me think, about what was not wrote in the bible, because as we all know history is writing by the winners or the version of events not what actally happened.

Loads, I loved 'As Good As It Gets' ( I know someone like this and it gave me insight)... Shawshank Redemption.... Schindler's List, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest... and a favourite of long ago, The Deer Hunter...oh what a nightmare that movie really made me think how de-railed these guys were. As for a romantic movie that I can identify with is 'White Palace', Susan Sarandon... unreal/real circumstances. And the latest one that I really enjoyed on TV was The Butterfly Effect. Loads more. but wont bore you any more!!!!
