I am not sure about being a new style-when i was younger, my grandmother had a "hassock" which was basically a foot stool that matched the chair. So there was a comfortable living room chair, and a square block to match, which you rested your feet on (i guess they didn't have recliners then). So, back in the day, a hassock was a foot stool. Maybe what you are talking about is similar.

Unless this some kind of new company name, a hassock is a foot stool. I rember my grandmother had one that the top was hinged and she stored magazines in it. Also put my little brothers in it and closed the lid!

A hassock isn't new...it's a stuffed or tufted footstool, usually matching an armchair.

no, it's not a new style of chair really.
but it is a stuffed chair without legs and wheels, it takes very little place and is very comfortable
