I was told that if a policeman is working undercover and you ask the direct question do you work for law inforcement or police they have to answer yes by law even though they are under cover?

Well I know in the US that is an urban legend. They do not have to tell you. If you think about it wouldn't that defeat the purpose of being under cover? Now if you get busted doing something, and you have a good enough lawyer, and it wasn't too serious of an offense, you might get off if they can prove its entrapment.
I don't know for sure about the UK laws, but I would be willing to be they are the same or similar.

No, no, of the 34th quadrillionth time no! A cop can even tell you a lie while you are under arrest and in the police station for questioning.

They can lie, it's a matter of protection. If you are undercover around a bunch of unsavory fellows and they ask you if you are a cop, and you tell them yes, they might feel the urge to kill you, if they have already given away too much information.

They don't have to, their cover will be blown. This is an Asian answer, but I follow UK and US systems.
