Neil Young first last and always. Although Skynyrd is great, nothing compares to Neil Young.

Hmm, I like both. But Skynyrd recorded a couple great albums, then faded, then the crash killed some of the most important members. None of the post-crash material has been all that strong.
While Young, despite some misses, continues to create interesting and sometimes strikingly original music. So I'd give the nod to Neil Young.
By the way, Young and Van Zant were friends, not really rivals.

Skynyrd, though Young is cool and much of the supposed animosity there was hyped by the media but not really felt by either Van Zant or Young. You can find photos well after the feud of Young wearing a Skynyrd t-shirt, for instance, and when asked about it directly both laughed it off.
While Skynyrd is often hailed as defending the south, they had plenty of issue with politics in the south that appears in songs just as it does with Young... they just had a delivery that didn't ruffle as many feathers.

As most of Lynyrd Skynyrd died prematurely they did not have the chance to compile as large a body of work as Neil Young - at least he has ben able to grow old with his music.

only have lynyrd skynyrd greatest hits (gold and platinum) but have many neil young albums

My favorite song at the moment is Harvest Moon...so Neil Young. Sure do like some of Skynard's tunes too tho!
