If we ourselves are the tricksters then why doesn't the trick work all the time? Why do we feel dependant on others for our own happiness?

Exactly my point, Valac Gypsy. Happiness does seem like delusion. One moment someone makes you happy and next someone else snatches it away. What changes? Apparently nothing...
Cosmiccoyote: I am sure there are tricks which certain people know very well. How else some have the ability to spread happiness all around?
Magnolia Flora: Abhayasa or practice while living in the thick of things itself seems tricky. Certain situations or people cannot be avoided. Are you talking about 'Nirlipt bhaav' i.e. indifference? Would love to hear more from you...

I think real happiness is never a trick. it's a natural sensation we get out of something with value; like when we were able to lend a hand to those who needed it,..or when we see lovely children at play. It just seems like a trick when it's not genuine at all...like a put up smile on the face. But when it springs from within and lasts longer than a moment. it's happiness --- for real.
OK, assuming it's just a trick; then the "tricksters" should be those (persons or things) that made you believe there was something to be happy about...like: some of your numbers being read from a lottery machine. That's a very sensational trick as you may call it, but it shouldn't be mistaken for happiness. It's just an aura of excitement and nothing more.

Depends. But true happiness is hard to find so I guess most of us only has happiness as a trick in our minds. The tricksters? Ourselves.

The real purpose of our existence is to be happy always.
Animals are unaware of the unhappiness.
They don`t know how to be depressed.
Depression is an adopted and imposed feeling of human specie without any particular reason, which is unwise and unnatural.
Brahma Sutra explains :-
"Anandamayo Abhyasat"
Really we have to learn and practice to be happy always without any particular reason.
Dear Param,
The "practice" is that, to be happy in most critical moments also.
The challenge is horrible......
But we have to practice......
That is why Geetha says:
"Nayam Atma balaheenena labhyah"
Only most courageous person can understand the `Self` "
Really I am not that much courageous

achenbreakin has given you an excellent answer, & I'd just add: Others make me happy, but I don't "depend" on them for my happiness.
If my mind is the trickster, or some mysterious little gnomes, that isn't happiness; it's a delusion.

Happy is mind made and is temporary...if there is a trickster it is your ego self...Joy however is one of the natural states of your true self..

I cannot conceive why it would matter even if it were a delusion. If I think I am happy, then I am.
