I would go with John Bonham (formerly of Led Zeppelin).
It's not what he did, it's what he didn't do. He knew when to shut up, and recognized that music isn't the instrument being played but sometimes what happens when the instrument ISN'T being played.
And when I say "shut up", it's not a criticism of his playing - he was technically very good. Too many musicians, though, play and don't give music a rest, which is a mistake.
